Christmas and New Year’s celebrations may be over in the UK but in China the festivities haven’t even begun! In 2018, the Year of the Dog, the Chinese New Year falls on Friday 16th February.
- The Chinese New Year festival lasts for 15 days from Friday 16th – March 2nd, 2018.
- The public holiday officially lasts for seven days from Thursday 15th February – Wednesday 21st, 2018.
Most Chinese people will take a week off work during that time but many areas of China will continue their celebrations according to the traditional festival length of time into March.
What does Chinese New Year mean for importers?
For importers, Chinese New Year basically means you need to get your orders in early!
This is a strictly observed traditional holiday celebrated in much the same manner than Americans celebrate Thanksgiving and Brits celebrate Christmas.
Chinese suppliers and factories are closed during Chinese New Year. If you want your shipments coming in with less of a possibility of delays or disruptions, you’ll want to start making arrangements now.
Also keep in mind that there is a lot of demand this time of year so ocean freight and airfreight rates may increase and shipment schedules could vary from day to day. So book early to save money and guarantee shipments arriving on time.
